Make-up artists can work for television stations, theaters or production companies as employees or contract as freelancers.

Duties
Before applying makeup on an individual, it is the prime responsibility of make-up artists to analyze the skin and figure out what type it is. They must then prep the clients’ skin for makeup application by moisturizing and cleansing, in order to avoid any unfavorable reaction. Make-up artists use several cosmetic products such as creams, powders, gloss and lipsticks to devise preferred results.

For actors, makeup artists use make-up to modify their character according to the scenes. Make-up is used to make someone of a different race and age, or to even create mock-up wounds and other special effects. Wigs and false eyelashes are also used by makeup artists. In many cases, make-up artists read scripts and consult with directors and make sure that the make-up is perfectly appropriate as per the character.
